The Carusos came to us with a marble foyer and a stair that no longer fit the room. We replaced their builder-grade run with a two-tone box stair — wide rift-and-quartered white oak treads stained to match the floor, painted risers and skirts, and an ebonized over-the-post handrail flowing into a sculpted newel.

The brass rod across the second-floor balcony was the homeowner's request after seeing it on a project we'd done in Allentown. We used iron balusters in three patterns, finished in satin black, all sourced and coordinated under our roof before delivery.

Four days on site to fit the railing and finish — the family was using the stair the same week.

The Center Valley homeowners had a 1990s wood-baluster stair that was structurally fine but visually dated. They wanted iron without ripping out the framing.

We pulled the original wood balusters and replaced them with three alternating oil-rubbed-bronze iron patterns from our metal catalog, then refinished the existing red-oak treads with a darker stain to ground the new ironwork. The handrail and newels were sound — we sanded and re-stained them on site.

The iron-baluster swap is the highest-impact, lowest-disruption upgrade we offer. This was textbook.

This one is a period restoration — new construction, built to look like it had always been there. The house was the former dean's residence at Centenary College in Hackettstown, NJ, and it burnt down. The stair you see here was built new for the rebuild, to the home's era.

Calling it a railing replacement would undersell what's in these photos. Turned white balusters, a stained oak over-the-post handrail running to wall brackets, curved starter treads at the base — and look past the stair: stained glass at the landing, paneled wainscot, a parquet border in the foyer. The stair had to belong to that house.
