The story
The Melissa project was a complete refresh of the existing staircase and railing. We removed the dated materials and replaced them with square-nosed white oak treads, a white oak handrail, custom white oak newel posts, and plain round iron balusters in satin black.
The custom newel posts were built for the project in our Whitehall shop, with clean square proportions that carry the white oak through the entire railing. Simple round iron balusters add contrast without competing with the woodwork or making the stair feel too busy.
The result is a much cleaner, lighter staircase that freshens up the entire entryway while still working with the architecture of the existing home.
