How long does an iron baluster swap take?

Usually one day, with very little mess. We remove the wood balusters, clean up the existing holes, and set the new iron balusters while the handrail and newels stay in place. You can use the stairs that evening. A curved stair or a full new railing takes longer. Send us a few photos and we'll give you a realistic timeline.

Do iron balusters meet building code?

Yes. The iron balusters we install meet current residential code for spacing and strength. We check the spacing when we measure and use the existing holes when we can, which keeps the cost down. On some older homes we need to drill new holes, which adds a little time on site but not much to the price.

What finishes do you offer?

Satin black is what most homeowners choose, and we keep it in stock. Oil-rubbed bronze is the most common alternative, and other powder-coated finishes are available by request. The iron arrives pre-finished from our suppliers, so nothing is painted on site. You can compare finish samples at our Whitehall showroom.

Should I choose iron or wood balusters?

Iron is durable and needs no upkeep. Wood gives you more warmth and matches an existing wood handrail. Most homeowners updating an existing railing choose iron balusters. Most homeowners replacing the whole railing choose a wood handrail with iron balusters. Send us a few photos of your staircase and your floors, and we'll tell you what we think works.

Will iron balusters fit my existing handrail?

In most homes, yes. We fit the new iron balusters into your existing handrail and treads, so the handrail and newels stay where they are. It changes the look of the staircase without changing its structure. We confirm the fit when we measure.

Can iron balusters work on a curved stair?

Yes. We fit each baluster to the angle of the curve as part of the installation, and there's no extra charge for stock patterns. A curved stair usually takes a bit longer on site than a straight run. Send us a few photos and we'll give you a realistic budget range and timeline.
