We give you a real ballpark on the first call, in five to ten minutes — a budget to plan with, not a bid. As a rule of thumb: an iron baluster swap runs about $2,000–$3,000, a railing replacement from about $2,500, and tread replacement from about $3,000 (treads with a matching railing run $8,000–$18,000). A custom staircase starts around $2,500, and grand custom builds reach $20,000–$70,000. We'll tell you what doesn't need doing so you only spend where it counts.

Most on-site work runs one to a few days — an iron baluster swap is a one-day job with very little mess, treads one to three days, a remodel two to five. A custom staircase takes longer because we build it in our Whitehall shop first: figure four to six weeks (eight to twelve for custom newel posts), then a few days to install. We schedule to your date and crate everything ahead so site time stays short.

You stay in the house. The staircase is off-limits during the workday but safe to use every night — we never leave you without a way upstairs. We mask off the work area, contain the dust, and vacuum up before we leave each day. Our own crew that measured does the install, so there are no surprises mid-job.

Both, but mostly we install. We design and build the stairs, install the railings, and stand behind the work — our own Snyder crew, start to finish, no mid-project handoffs. We also stock wood and iron parts at our Whitehall shop if a contractor or homeowner just needs material, but the bulk of what we do is measured, built, and installed by us, code-compliant. If something loosens later, we come back and fix it.

Remodeling keeps your existing staircase structure and upgrades the parts you see — treads, risers, newels, balusters, and rail — taking a builder-grade foyer to something permanent. A full replacement means a new custom staircase built in the same opening, which is the call only when the structure itself is past saving — and that's rare. Most of the time remodeling is the right answer: faster, less expensive, and less disruptive. We'll tell you honestly which one your stair needs.
